Ruori is the Finnish word for helm. My great-great-grandparents — the Coponens — knew it as a verb. They left Finland, crossed an ocean, and grabbed the helm of their own lives. They settled on Michigan's Upper Peninsula and built something out of cleared ground. This firm is named for that decision.

Why we exist.

Most search firms operate at scale. Dozens of searches at a time. Database sourcing. Slate of candidates pulled from a network the firm has rented for years. The placement happens, the fee gets paid, the firm moves on.

Twelve months later, half of those leaders are gone. The founder is starting over. The firm is, too — with a new client.

I've sat on every side of that transaction. The pattern wasn't subtle. It was the default.

I didn't want to run another search firm. I wanted to run a firm where the search was the smallest part of the work.

What Ruori does.

We're a boutique. We run a small number of searches at a time, deeply, led by senior partners who've carried the bag. Three pillars: Advisory before the search, Search during, Landing after. Every retained search includes all three.

Because the failure isn't usually the candidate. The failure is the role being scoped wrong, the founder not being ready to hand off, or the new leader not being supported through the first six months. We built the firm around the failure modes we'd seen.
